The First Evangelist...the Woman at the Well

Bishop Violet Fisher speaks to my heart about our call...bearing the story of the Woman at the well as an example of one transformed to go and make disciples. She claims that this was our first evangelist - our first new church - started by her witness.
My heart stirs for this is MY call story. I was the woman at the well - the woman at the $1 wells I should say. And Jesus called me into this great commission - me - even me! Bishop Fisher reminds us that that no matter who we are - we are called by Jesus Christ - just as the unamed woman was -to share the good news with EVERY-ONE and draw us into the great Body of Christ. What believe this is that we must let Christ's water fill us as He calls us to drink it - fill up a cup, indeed fill up the bucket and take it out into the world. My prayer this morning - as we start to face the issues of Human Sexuality, Family and other matters at the heart, that we keep drinking the water and never forget that it will quench our thirst.

Bishop Scott Jones to Preside the Floor this evening

Kansas folks- our Bishop will lead the precedings this evening beginning at 7:00pm. Those back at home can tune in on the live feed. Please pray for him as he guides us all in holy conferencing. PS: His son Arthur did a wonderful job presenting a petition concerning a study for the Global Nature of the Church.
PPS: We also voted last night to support the production of a new hymnal for the UMC. This hymnal may not be the "traditional" hymnal we tend to think of due to the possibility of technology and communications. Check out Adam Hamilton's blog to the right with a great commentary on the subject.

Grace and Peace! Jan

We just heard that some delegates have been voting on two machines....

Don't know how that affects the vote, nor how many have been doing this. Most votes have been by show of hand, but instead of standing vote with pages - they have now on tight votes moved toward using the machines. I think that technology is necessary - but do wonder how much can be truly monitered without actually "seeing" a show of hands or standing. It's pretty hard to raise two hands for a vote- that kind of sticks out!

President of Liberia - First Elected Female Head of State for Africa and Liberia to speak! Make sure to tune into the live feed!

She will speak at 4:00pm Central Time. Here's a short Wikipedia biography. Not added to this biography is that she is a member of the United Methodist Church.

Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf (born October 29, 1938) is the current President of Liberia, Africa's first elected female head of state and Liberia's first elected female president. She was elected President in the 2005 presidential election and took office in January 2006.
Her grandfather was a German who married a rural market woman. The grandfather was forced to leave the country during the war in 1917.
Two of Johnson-Sirleaf's grandparents were
indigenous Liberians. Her father, the son of the Gola Chief Jahmalae and Jenneh, one of his many wives, was born in Julejuah, Bomi County. As a result of her grandfather's friendship and loyalty to President Hilary Richard Wright Johnson and on the advice of the President, her father was brought to, his name changed to Johnson and he was given to the settler family, McCritty.
Johnson-Sirleaf graduated from the
College of West Africa (Monrovia), a United Methodist high school. She received a Bachelor of Science in Accounting at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Wisconsin, U.S. in 1964, an economics diploma from the University of Colorado in 1970, and a Master of Public Administration from Harvard University in 1971. She is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated [1], a social action organization and the first collegiate sorority founded by and for Black women (1908).
On
5 November 2007, President George W. Bush awarded Johnson-Sirleaf the Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian award given by the United States.
Returning to Liberia after Harvard, Johnson-Sirleaf became Assistant Minister of Finance in President
William Tolbert's administration. In 1980, Tolbert was overthrown and killed by army sergeant Samuel Doe, ending decades of relative stability. Doe was a member of the Krahn ethnic group and was the first Liberian president not to be descended from the elite ex-American slave community. For the next ten years, Doe allowed the Krahn people to dominate public life.
After the overthrow of Tolbert, Johnson-Sirleaf went into exile in
Nairobi, Kenya, where she worked for Citibank. She returned to run for Senate in 1985, but when she spoke out against Doe's military regime, she was sentenced to ten years in prison. Released after a short period, she moved to Washington, D.C.. She returned to Liberia again in 1997 in the capacity of an economist, working for the World Bank, and Citibank in Africa.
Initially supporting
Charles Taylor's bloody rebellion against President Samuel Doe in 1990, she later went on to oppose him, and ran against him in the 1997 presidential election. She managed only 10% of the votes, as opposed to Taylor's 75%. Taylor charged her with treason. She campaigned for the removal of President Taylor from office, playing an active and supportive role in the transitional government, as the country prepared itself for the 2005 election. With Taylor's departure, she returned to take over the leadership of the Unity Party.

Where have all the protests gone....long time passing....

“So…what do you think of General Conference this year?” is the question that is asked by many as we anticipate the deeper issues coming to the forefront of the floor. Those who have been before say that the atmosphere is much less divisive. The lack of protest attitude is missing up to this point – but is it missed? Will it show up? Or, are we really working together?

The votes for Judiciary Committee and University Senate seemed almost flawless, despite a few complications with the voting machines. The big surprise was how the results appeared centrist. Those chosen are fairly moderate even the Reconciling Movement as seen in their blog, seem quite pleased with the outcome.

Compared to other years – there are more performances and presentations. It could be said that the music is lulling the conference into a mellow mood. I mean how can you be agitated when choirs of children from Uganda sing about Jesus’ love? How can you feel anything but hope when you see a video about our work in helping victims from Katrina and how we continue to rebuild and bring hope to those areas?

So…. So far….so Mellow. Some may think this is good – others may be wary – but all agree this is definitely a different kind of General Conference.

Morning worship (notes only) and Elections so far..

WHY do we want to know about Judicial Council candidates?

The Judicial Council is the highest judicial body or "court" of The United Methodist Church. Its nine members are elected by the General Conference. The Judicial Council determines the constitutionality of acts or proposed acts of the General, Jurisdictional, Central, and Annual Conferences. It acts on these either on appeal of lower rulings or through requests for declaratory decisions. It also rules on whether acts of other official bodies of the denomination conform to The Book of Discipline. This is done in accordance with procedures established in The Book of Discipline.

As you can see - if the council is not well balanced then it may sway "to the left" or "to the right" - much like the US Supreme Court.

One of the many things we will be voting for is the Judicial Council

Here are the candidates:

Lay Recommendations:
Angela Brown (Retired District Attorney and Navy Reserve Commander)
Reuben Reyes (Supreme Court Jurist, Philippines)n

Lay Alternatives:
Jay Arthur Garrison (Conference Chancellor)
William White (Conference Chancellor)

Clergy Recommendations:
Kathi Austin-Mahle (5 time General Conference Delegate)
Belton Joyner (Instructor of UM history and theology, Popular Author)
William B. Lawrence (Dean, Perkins Seminary)

Clergy Alternates:
Joe May (Local and National leader)
Rod Wilmoth (World-wide mission experience, current Council Alternate)

Hey All.... I safely arrived back in Texas

I'm here and ready to help Steph report . A quick overview of what happened this weekend - Legislative Committees continued to meet and discern the petitions that would be brought to the floor. Read Rev. Mark Holland's account of the weekend through his link on the right. The Kansas Crew wore their KU shirts on Saturday - including Bishop Jones! Right now we're in a competition with the other "final four" conference in raising money for Nothing but Nets by bidding on a basketball that may( or may not) be signed by the Bishops of those conferences. So far the bid is at $1200.

Legislative Committees are no longer meeting and we have "moved to the floor". Now - it really gets interesting! The voting begins. I will post the order of the day shortly. Remember to check the live stream - it should be going all day today!

Glad to be back! grace! Jan

"Remember Your Baptism and Rejoice!," -Bishop Hutchinson

Sermon- Bishop W. Hutchinson – (a few things that stuck out for me from his sermon..)
We United Methodists are baptized by water, or sometimes with reluctance as teenage confirmation students. Years later we realize that there is something more, ...Yes, there is more..and that more is the connecting link to the very spirit of Jesus the Christ.
Have we moved yet to the my, my, my state of baptism to the Yes, Indeed! What is the state of baptism?
Told story of son who was going to revival and he told him no matter what, to not move when invited to come forward….fast forwarded about his first appointment and how he invited them to ‘come to the alter..maybe because their parents told them not to move!” Shared how his own congregation must have been told to stay in their seats..because only one came forward the first time, then five more the second time…Inviting us to come on down to the waters of baptism…”Water AND the Spirit, Water and the Spirit..Water and the Spirit..amen!

“Wade in the Water” (singing)

Remember Your Baptism and Rejoice! (Palm branches sprinkling water on entire Conference floor).

Kansas to sport KU National Championship Shirts Saturday!

Thanks to Mark Holland's fabulous idea... the entire Kansas East/Kansas West delegation will be sporting KU Basketball Championship shirts on Saturday! And of course Bishop Scott Jones, Mary Lou, and countless others will be too. In fact, it was Bishop Jones (well..actually it was Mary Lou who made the decision) on which day to wear them. Word is that so is Retired Bishop Mutti and his wife. More on this tomorrow..by the way, out of 40 shirts, Mark has sold all but 6! I still cannot believe TX actually came to us for a shirt. We will keep you updated...

Trying to be optimistic...but this is driving me crazy!

As I mentioned earlier, we have begun our preliminary meetings. Last night I decided not to mention the fact that I was frustrated with the whole process..because I thought it would get better! Today, was not much different so now I feel a little better about airing frustration..though I will try not to be too negative!

Last night, after starting our meeting fairly late, the Chair announced that strangers do not make good decision makers. Therefore she said, "Tonight, we will not be making any decisions. Instead, we are going to take some time to get to know each other. Turn to the person behind you and get to know them". I wasn't too frazzled by it until she mentioned that we were not even going to look over the material! So...we turned to the person behind us and introduced ourselves...continued talking for 20 more minutes, etc. I assumed she was going to ask another question or have us turn to someone else (believe it or not though I don't really like icebreakers) but she didn't. Instead, she said that we would have a lot of work ahead, but that we could go ahead and leave as we have had a long night.

Okay, so don't get me wrong....I LOVE getting out of things early! Seriously, it is the best feeling in the entire world UNLESS you have a plate of petitions to go through, collaborate on, and vote on. When you only have Thurs - Sunday, with plenty of petitions to discuss and come into agreement on..well, I would rather get them done, then get out early at the end....not the case. So after rushing through my dinner to be on time for the 7:30 meeting. Instead, I found myself done by 8:30! Keep in mind that we were scheduled from 7:30-11pm to meet! While other groups were taking a break..our group was taking a hike!

Then there is today. Our committee was scheduled four times: 10:45-12:30, 2:30-3:40, 4-5pm, and 7:30-11pm. Can you believe that we did not even elect our sub-committee members until 7:30pm..which means that we did not go over the petitions until almost 8pm! And...to make it even better, we did not get anything voted on as a group! But here is the kicker for me...we got out early again! We were dismissed at 10:30. Again, I am all about it...until something like this.

My biggest fear is that we are going to run out of time in the end. We have a couple times we meet tomorrow..but only 2 hours on Sunday. If we are not through, that is it. Sometimes I wonder if that is how certain things end up passing. You eventually cut time so close and you have to make a decision in a hurry. Things that should pass sometimes don't (I know, opinion), and things that should not, do! It bothers me.

Anyhow, I am tired tonight on top of it so I apologize for my lack of positive energy. Truly, I am loving every minute of this experience though. But as Jan and I promised, this is a "real" look of general conference. We will do our best to give you the facts, but many of you are interested in the real thoughts and feelings. We are definitely keeping it real!

Prayers for plenty of rest--and a return of the positive energy for tomorrow! ;)

Something to ponder...

Last night I attended my first plenary session..Actually, I was originally supposed to attend Board of Discipleship, but with some of our reserve members unable to come due to health, etc...I gladly agreed to switch over to Independent Commissions. For those that have asked why Kansas East is allowing all of us (delegates, reserves, and Juridictional Reserves) to attend General Conference, it is so that each of us can try to cover all the general agencies and areas covered. This allows each of us to be able to keep up on legislation before it is voted on and also will help us as we report back to our conference later.

Anyhow, one of the first orders of business was to elect our Chairperson, Vice -Chair and Secretary. With great surprise I watched a senior in high school run for V-Chair. With great confidence and a smooth campaign speech, she told us about all of the committees and things that she had been involved in. I wondered to myself, "I wonder what this group will do to her..will they give her the opportunity..or do they think it should be somebody else..somebody with more experience, more prestige, more resume fillers...etc.

Unfortunately, she did not make Vice-Chair. In fact, the next most common thing quickly happened. They wanted to elect her as secretary! She graciously thanked everyone but said no, thanks. I couldn't help but think to myself..go figure. A part of me was kind of sad, sad to think that as many strides as we have made, we still tend to have this attitude that you must serve your time before you are given any sort of leadership opportunity. Now, I do think the candidates that were chosen were great candidates and do a great job, but I also couldn't help but see what was happening. I actually heard someone tell her, you need to start with something that won't really matter (by the way, a secretary does matter!). Somehow the secretary positon is the one everyone feels is the safest to give to anybody (which by the way, isn't true!).

I thought about this woman..18 years old, a senior in High School..around the age of some of my own youth in my youth group at home. Although a part of me understands it all..the other part of me struggles with it. Everyone always says, don't worry, just wait, you have to earn your time.. Someday, you will be given the responsibility, someday you can make a difference, someday we will need you...but it just isn't right now. Do you see what I am saying?

Time and time again I have seen stories just like this happen over and over (even to myself). We (the UMC) keep saying, you are the future of the UMC. We need you.. But have you ever heard an answer to the question why do you need us?" Well, our church will die, we won't be able to pay our apportionments, etc, etc. I tend to look at things from a different view. I saw this young woman, excitement in her eyes, ready to serve her church and to make a difference! Her excitement...will it always be there? How many times can a youth or young adult be told, "sorry, we don't need you just yet..please come back later," before they no longer come back. Could this be why our denomination is dying.. because some of us finally feel that we are not wanted for the right reasons?

I struggle with this. I too am a young adult. I am 29 years old and yes, I look about 16. I have struggled my entire life with this. It is funny most days, but others it burns me. I also struggle with being an active United Methodist, and a woman, involved in the denomination. I am married, have two small children, and believe me, it took great work to be able to come here.

It isn't just young people! I have many clergy and conference friends who continually ask me, "Why Stephanie have you not went to seminary? Why not consider a career as a pastor". The truth? It isn't as easy as it looks! As a young, married, with children, woman, my options are a little more complicated. How many woman do you know in our denomination who are clergy, but their husbands are not? There are some, but not many. The truth is that as much as my husband supports my decision to be in ministry, etc... I still must deal with the fact that he is the bread-winner.. I just cannot be shipped to a small town somewhere, we must stay where his job is too. Not to mention the aspect that although woman are accepted into the United Methodist Church under full rights and order just like men, there is still a sense of the men's club with some individuals. Please note I mean some, not all. We still struggle with the notion that woman are not to be in a position of power. We sometimes forget the reason these woman are in these positions...because they want to spread the word, share Jesus's love, and to make a difference!

I believe that if we are going to continue and grow, or "stay alive" as a denomination, that we must face some of these issues and explore them more. What are the issues that are turning away our young (and yes, even older people). Could it be they see these things? Could it be that these issues, ones that we think our visitors do not see..are visible to all. Please know that I am not bashing the church, but I am worried. I work with young people everyday. If I, at the age of 29 struggle sometimes with whether or not all of this is worth it, what are the younger folks going through. I am lucky, I have been a part of the church for a long time. I am an optimist. Yes, there are days I want to throw in the towel, there are days it just doesn't seem worth it anymore...but somehow I keep plugging away, keep trying to find myself and find my way...

I also have hope. Hope. Our theme for this conference...."A Future With Hope". Yes, there is a future of hope. One that includes young AND old, laity and clergy, liberals and conservatives. My hope is that we remember that young woman with her bright, shiny, eyes, her strong motivation, her determination, her commitment and her love for God. It is my hope that we will find her, beg her to keep involved, and finally put away the belief that age is more important than life experiences. I hope that in five years this young woman is still in this conference, still connected to the United Methodist Church, and hopefully (sooner than later) able to find that one person who will open the door for her. Open hearts, Open Minds, and Open Doors. But are we there yet?...

Thank You Texas for the cookies!

AS I sit and enjoy some quality break time in the press room...I have before me a ziploc bag of homemade cookies! The bag says, "A Gift from First United Methodist Church in Waxahachie, TX, in the Waxahachie District. On the opposite side is the bible verse, Philippians 4:13, " I can do everything Through Him who gives me strength". Now, I don't know anybody from the Waxahachie District, let alone the town... But what I do know is that Texas has done a great job of showing their southern hospitality. Many of us are definitely a little tired of eating out already (and we still have the weekend plus a week!) and this simple act of giving, is a reminder how connectional we truly CAN be. The cookies were great! Even greater to me is that somebody took the time to not only bake some homemade goodies for the entire conference (remember that there are way over 1,000 people here) but that they took the time to remind us of scripture and that somehow, someway, United Methodists from all over are keeping us in thought and prayer... Thank you TX!

Editor's Note: Jan traveled home for the weekend to be with her church but will be back on Sunday...Prayers for safety and rest....(Those that know both of us know that we like to talk a lot. I don't think her and I have stopped talking since I picked her before we left KS! We are learning that we are SO much alike it's crazy! Safe travels to all those traveling back and forth

Nothing But Nets and Southern Hospitality...

We watched a video presentation about the "Nothing But Nets" campaign. Afterwards the speaker for World Malaria Day (which is today) told us that the amount on the screen was a lie... "Nothing But Nets" has raised over 20 Million dollars!

He then left the podium, walked through the crowd, and told us about his daughter who just recently celebrated her 24th birthday. He shared about how while he was thinking about growing up with her, the phone rang. It was that day that he learned that one of his colleagues daughters had died of malaria..on the day of his daughter's 24th birthday. He shared how later when he arrived here that he apologized to him (the Bishop) for thinking of Disneyland and other material things for 24 years, but not thinking about diseases such as malaria... powerful story.

Then he took a $10 bill and placed it on the table. He then reminded us that it only takes $10 to buy a net.... Afterwards, we watched as the table in the middle (which just hours earlier had served us communion) became a place to place offering and net money. I will post pictures later...

Opening Worship on Friday....

Opening Worship:
Worship began with song and music. The Chancel Choir of First United Methodist Church, Lawrence, KS was one of our featured choirs this morning! They will also be performing at lunch time under the direction of Sara Wentz!

Bishop Joao Machado – Began morning worship with “Good Morning” in several different native languages. He then began opening worship by speaking in his native language and having someone else translate it to English. I believe it is a good experience for those of us that speak English to experience what it is like for our delegates who must have the word translated. Though we are at a place where our neighbors are from many different countries around the world, I think we sometimes tend to get stuck in the rut of trying to Americanize everything! Here at least, the General Conference makes great attempts to help our brothers and sisters around the world. Having the sermon translated does take extra work and attention, but the beauty of the words! And as I noticed, passion and love for Christ’s word is universally shown in the faces of all..regardless of our speech or dialect.

Came to GC his first time, not as delegate, but as a member of a committee. He was a new pastor just out of school his first time. Told people he was coming to the Jerusalem of the Church! ;) Went back to his country after General Conference and asked his Bishop to translate. Taught this to his own country. “In 20 years of being a Bishop or on Council of Bishop, I see that this church is blessed with women and men, laity and clergy, with people with tremendous talents…so what it is missing? We need to DO what we SAY. Yes the world does need transformation! But to transform, we must BE transform! We cannot go out into the world and say that we are going to transform, if we are not willing to transform ourselves!”

Lawrence First United Methodist Church – featured Choir after sermon! “Let the Truth Abound” featured song. Absolutely beautiful!

After a “movin TX style” Lord song (those that had coffee were movin and shakin by the way!….the business meeting began!

Dancin TX style this morning....Steph & Jan

Lawnrece First Sings Us Into the Spirit of the Day

Beautiful Spirit enters, as a soloist sings with the angelic power of a Spiritual African American hymn - the word's "let your truth abound". We recieve our benediction from worship in a language Steph and I don't speak - but can understand....and it breaks into "Down by the Riverside".

So friends - join in the clapping - and say "I ain't gonna study war no more!"

PS: Nigeria has had trouble getting here (they have 40 delegates we believe) and they are seated in front of the Kansas Area delegations - each day - more and more show up! We forget what a privelege it is to travel with ease!

Kansas is WELL represented

Just a few notes about yesterday afternoon and evening and then we'll get onto today!
Yesterday afternoon, we met in Legisltative Committees for the first time. To refresh your memory, these are the committees that "review, sort and refine legislative proposals (petitions). No action is final until taken by the General Conference in plenary session." (2008 GC Visitor's Guide)

There are 13 committees:
Church and Society 1, Church and Society 2, Conferences, Discipleship, Faith and Order, Financial Administration, General Administration, Global Ministries, Independent Commissions, Judicial Administration, Local Church, Ministry and Higher Education, and Superintendency.

To Chair or Vice-Chair or serve as Secretary of one of these committees is quite an honor. Furthermore, to Chair a sub-group is also an important task (as each committee breaks into subgroups based on catagories of legislation. For example, in Church and Society 2 there are four - legislation concerning Human Sexuality, Family, Quality of Life and Other.

Our Chair of Delegation, Luke Wetzel is Vice-Chair of the Discipleship Legislative Committee. Kansas West's own Tyrone Gordan, former pastor of St. Mark UMC, is Chair of that committee. Kansas West's Chair Dixie Brewster is Chair of the Human Sexuality Sub-Committee.

Last night, the sub-committees basically elected chairs and assigned sub-committees - today they begin their deliberations.

Please pray for all the committees as they do their work!

Thursday, April 24, 2008

Luke Wetzel takes action!

Luke has officially spoken on the floor! Concerning language used to refer to young adults - he found the phrase redundent because it separated laity, clergy and young adults from each other - when indeed young adults and young people ARE laity and clergy in all voting matters.

Thoughts on General Conference thus far..

Last night I turned to Jan and told her, "I still cannot believe that we are here". We arrived here Tuesday evening and were quickly drawn into the beginning of history. Literally, the United Methodist Church celebrated its 40th Anniversary yesterday. The birthplace took place in Dallas, TX..only 30 miles from where we currently are now. I watched in awe as the video of the merging churches was broadcast over the big screen.

Later that evening, Jan said something about how she couldn't understand why some people kept commenting to us (before we arrived) about HAVING to be at General Conference. Both of us replied each time, "have to? We don't have to..we want to!" The worship service we saw last night was something that I wish our local churches could participate and see first hand. Often, I believe we, those of us that attend conferences and other gatherings, sometimes take for granted all of the opportunities we have. To often I believe that we forget about how many people do not realize or get a chance to see what we see. Imagine 6500 people gathered together (that was how many that were in worship) singing together in one voice. Something must be said for the feeling of unity and peace.

After a beautiful evening of dancers, music, and worship, we began our preliminary proceedings. It was a time of answering questions, voting on how we were going to vote, and how we would proceed. Admittingly, at times it was boring..but as Jan said, "John Wesley would be proud!". However, we did not end until closer to 11pm, then met with our delegation until later. By the time we went to bed it was 1:30am.

Today....what a day. We first heard from the Connectional Table as they reported on where and how our money is spent. One of the inspirations that stuck out for me personally? A 7 year old girl by the name of Katherine. She was so inspired by the Nothing But Nets campaign was able to raise over $10,000 for Nothing But Nets. She was able to do this by creating a diorama to educate people about Nothing But Nets. Doesn't this prove that all of us are not only called, but have the capability of going out and being Disciples! I was inspired and uplifted to see how our money is at work in the church. More later on this perhaps..

Here are notes from the WHOLE Young Person's Address

Once again....notes are rough....we'll comment later.

Horrified by starting YA ministries at the typical UM Church in downtown, from years ago. Later felt won over by the people of the church that could tell you all the remodeling or who has gotten married over the past 60 years. This is the hope of the YA, to be at a place where they can belong….
This is the hope of any church, any building, any person, anywhere. This is God doing a new thing….still at same old church downtown..babies are being born, etc.
Sometimes I feel discouraged and wonder why I should just keep trying…. Andrew Craig..Rocky Mountain…. God has put people here to help guide me through life struggles”

Video..be not afraid… inspiration of little boy in village dreaming of being God’s message.
Girl from Rocky Mountain conf..Be not afraid..so that one day all people will be seen not as rich poor, black, white, but as beautiful children of God beloved in God’s Sight.
“If we are not afraid, If we are not afraid, this church can rise up for the future of God”
(KIRA) “Friends hope and dream in Russia of the day that the UM Church becomes a safe place where they can belong.” (bong processional)
Who is my neighbor..Rebecca Farnum West Michigan….
“In the UM Church we have begun to break down geographical barriers..Neighbors are not just those that live next to us.
Who are the Samaritans in your life? Jesus wasn’t about going to serve only those that are easy. You need to go and love those that you struggle with. We are called to share that love with our neighbors..go and do likewise”.
The UMC has a message to this world..it is time to transcend the division….father of Methodism…John Wesley..was not afraid to break down the religion of the time. Thought outside of his society’s box..and formed his own quadrilateral box…” Rathom…
Rev Arnoldy –
“We can judge and demonize each other so much easier than we can learn to love each other. You can choose that path because it keeps you safe. “
Many voices, one call… (Matthew)
This Methodist tradition of ours is not about being the righteous one. It is time for us to be honest with ourselves, set aside fear of control. Ounce of comfort comes from pretending to be righteous. I have faith, I have faith in knowing that what we do here transcends all barriers. I wonder what will happen to this church that I love. As YA we hear all the times, you are the future of the church. But what about you? What are you responsibility. Will the church even exist if we talk about the church, without action. We want to make a difference in this church..but we are not willing to wait. Love and faith in God requires action now! Love and faith requires INTERACTION now. Are you willing to wait? We are willing, what about you? (Applause==drums)

THE TIME IS NOW>>>LET US BEGIN>..all
Standing ovation by entire conference! Great job young people!
These notes are as fresh as they get without being a live stream....that means they'll be rough!
Enjoy! Steph

Episcopal Address

Episcopal Address - Yes - It Was GOOD
So far, every address has been given by women Bishop Riggle Huie, Bishop Christopher and Mary Anne Swenson General Secretary.... yey Women! We have seen people earnestly sharing in the vision to emphasize what we do well and calling us back to radical remembrance of who we are as a social gospel people - and yet doing this in new ways!I know to some this may seem "too good to be true" and we are not naive - the debates have not started. However, the foundation of this community is being built on the common table and the common hope.We will keep you posted on the Young People address that will come shortly. Mary Anne Swenson calls us to say together...Let us be the cup overflowing in a thirsty world! One note for all....say it with us.... Indeed let us be the cup overflowing! The young persons address has just started...the speakers are playing bongos....yes bongos!

Five people just died of AIDS

In the matter of a minute - watching clips of children and people around the world - with a heart beat as the soundtrack - at the end of the video it was announced "Five people just died of AIDS"

One minute!
Take one minute and pray that with God's help that we "The United Methodist Church" and the Church as a whole will eradicate AIDS!

Thursday Morning

Right now we are in the middle of communion and throughout the liturgy we are watching clips from around the world that share how this "table of hope" is changing the world in Christ. People who ar we starting ministries in poor communities, going to be with those in prison and transforming them in hope. As Bishop Huie said as pictures of war in Iraq, schools around the world that teach and bring Christ "raise your hand if your church has helped bring Christ to people like these. " Everyone raised their hands.
Please be in communion with us this morning and pray for how you bring Christ through your church and your work to people all over the world!

Last Thoughts for Wednesday

Tonight was utterly amazing in worship. The communion table, shaped like a massive tree ring with huge roots for legs – was at the center of the arena. The bishop’s called all to turn toward the center and face the “tree of hope” table as we sang the liturgy, which had a Taize-ish feel to it. 6500 were gathered for worship – approximately 1000 more than the last General Conference. As we sang our final “Alleluia” of the communion liturgy – we found ourselves holding hands with neighbors and lifting them together in connection and praise of the Almighty God who unifies us in the first place. The One who unifies us in Jesus Christ!

Will there be times of disagreement and even disarray as we scramble to put petitions together? Of course there will be – humans disagree. But humans are also made to be filled with hope, and it is this hope that we call upon to surround us, be in us and breathe through all the conversations held around this common “the table of hope”.

Remember – even if you are not here in body or even in mind – we urge you to consider yourself gathered together around this table that makes us “One in the Spirit” and “One in the Lord”.

We leave you with this last thought – don’t take for granted the Church you have inherited and that is changing even as we speak. We’re all in this together.

Our little funny for the evening – we think Bishop Jones looks like Harry from Night Court! He even sounds like him a little – tell us what you think! We’re thankful for him and the blessings he’s bestowed on our Kansas Area.
Pray for us and we’ll pray for you!

Live from the GC opening worship!

Unbelievable!
I said to Steph while we were in line to share in communion "who could ever consider this a bad thing?" Steph said "it would be a bad thing if we wern't here!"

Look for video and comments soon and know YOU SHOULD HAVE HOPE FOR THE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH! We may not be perfect - but we are going onto perfection!

Live...from the TOP FLOOR of the Marriott!

So far...really nothing has happened. However - the greeters must have interned with Wal Mart and K-mart as we warmly greeted at the door by friendly volunteers in red and blue vests saying "welcome to General Conference! and on the back of their vests it said, "How May I Help You?" No, they didn't throw a roll at us!
We've checked in (Steph is an official reserve delegate now) AND thanks to Lisa Diehl - we are considered "the Press" As Stephanie just said "that is soooo scary!" Please note that we have no idea what this reallymeans BUT will have EXCELLENT SEATS!
We have already gotten a "free t-shirt" - wonder how many we will get by the end of the week?!
Our Kansas East delegation have arrived and let us say - your delegation chair has "suited up" and is ready to represent!
WE will be keeping our home state in our prayers - but you need to know - Mark Holland is converting Texans through the sale of KU NCAA Championship t-shirts! Please pray for us! In Christ's love, peace and grace! Steph and Jan
